About Us
Cafe' Fish is now open for it’s 5th season. Doesn’t time fly? Up until now it’s been run and owned by sisters Carolyn and Lindsay McDonald however this year sees Carolyn being replaced by another Tarbert girl – Liz McGougan. All were brought up on the shores of the famous Loch Fyne in the fishing village of Tarbert. Most of their working lives have been spent in the catering trade – for Lindsay in the family run Anchor Hotel, preparing dishes using local seafood since the early 80's. And for Liz – Head Chef picking up coveted awards in the West End of Glasgow. Now they’re based in another Argyll fishing community, Tobermory on the island of Mull. The Cafe' restaurant sits at the end of the pier with terrific views over Tobermory Bay to Calve island and beyond. From its dining terrace you can watch an amazing selection of fresh seafood en route from the Sound of Mull to your plate.
“We have our own boat so shellfish is landed daily, local boats land us other local treasures including monkfish, dover sole, cod and squid. Our oysters and crabs come from Croig, mussels from Inverlussa and our salad leaves, herbs and tomatoes are picked daily and supplied from Glengorm Gardens - all on the island. The “Specials” board changes daily depending what the sea throws up to us. Our wines come from Inverarity Vaults and are hand picked by ourselves and Jason
(sampled thoroughly of course!)
As much as possible we use fresh natural ingredients. We bake our own bread, scones and shortbread. Our fish is mostly served simply seasoned and grilled, with a wedge of lemon. We don't believe in hiding the flavour with sauces.
“Fresh produce, simple cooking, fabulous flavour”.
Lonely Planet have recommended us as one of their top 5 restaurants to eat in Scotland.
The Good Food Guide have nominated the Café for Restaurant of the Year 3 years in a row. Last year we were runners up in the Scottish Chef Awards Seafood Restaurant category.
High praise indeed – come along and tell us what you think.
